Thanks to VegFund, Vegan Outreach has been able to distribute free vegan food samples and literature as part of their Adopt a College program. VegFund has provided funds for vegan food samples and the tabling fees at Mills College, University of Missouri at St. Louis, Fresno City College, and countless other schools. The free vegan food always attracts many pedestrians and lots of enthusiasm among the students, resulting in extremely effective and fun outreach!
VEDDAS is an animal-rights organization in Brazil. Thanks to the support of VegFund, last year we were able to reach 50,000 people and educate them about veganism. We have a mobile multimedia vehicle and cart, which we use weekly to show the public footage from factory farms. Thank you, VegFund, for supporting our outreach!
This year, a working model of veganic agriculture will be started at Animal Place’s Grass Valley sanctuary! The deer fence was recently constructed, and the goats were moved to their new pasture. Soon, cool weather crops of greens, beets, and peas will be planted, and warm weather crops will follow in the late spring. Thanks in part to VegFund, pigs, staff, and visitors will be eating the first harvest in a few short months!
Thanks to VegFund, IFA was able to sponsor the first ever Ethiopian Vegan Conference held in Addis Ababa on December 9, 2011. About 60 people attended, including members of parliament, the Ethiopian EPA, and the Ethiopian news media. As a result of the conference, an article about the detrimental effect of meat consumption was printed in The Reporter, a prominent political paper.
The IFA also partnered with the Ethiopian Vegan Association and distributed food to 100 homeless men, women, and children. Keith McHenry, co-founder of Food Not Bombs, spoke at the conference and helped distribute vegan food to the homeless.
After the publication of my book Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows, countless vegans asked me for a resource that would provide them with concise information about carnism (the invisible system that conditions people to eat certain animals) to share with other vegans as well as carnists. Vegans also asked for resources to help them use their understanding of carnism to improve their personal lives and their activism. I decided to create Carnism Awareness & Action Network, a web-based organization that works to expose and transform carnism and empowers vegan advocates and concerned citizens through education and activism. CAAN was funded entirely through a grant from VegFund; without VegFund's support, CAAN would not have been possible. Since its launch, CAAN has been used as a resource by activists from all over the world, awareness of carnism has spread widely, and I now have a new foundation for my outreach. Thank you, VegFund!
