Mercy for Animals gave out samples of vegan hot chocolate and marshmallows along with Vegan Eating and Starter Guides to passerby in Union Square Park, NYC. The event was a huge success, reaching over 300 people!
Thousands of students and their families attended this event. Over 1,600 vegan brochures, and almost 700 Tofutti Cuties, were distributed. Many people were unfamiliar with soy products and were interested in learning about alternatives to meat and dairy.
Each day, between 18 to 30 students and teachers at Crawford High took part in a vegan lunch. During lunch, Mr. Folkman read one reason from the book "101 Reasons I'm a Vegetarian" and followed this up with a discussion. On Wednesday, there was a guest speaker from the Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL). Various literature produced by PETA and APRL on the merits of a vegan diet were readily available. Participants learned the truth about dairy and egg production, as well as the many nutritional advantages of a vegan diet. The students and teachers were very receptive, and some even pledged to go veg for a week!
